COPPER ALLOY DATA SHEET

ACB 3180

Lead-free Commercial Bronze, Nickel Bearing ACB 3180 is composed of approximately 89% copper, 9.4% zinc, 1% nickel, and 0.6% tellurium.  The alloy combines the natural corrosion resistance of commercial bronze, the higher strength associated with the addition of nickel, and the higher machinability from tellurium typical of free cutting leaded commercial bronzes.

The relatively low zinc content provides excellent corrosion resistance in potable water along with a pleasing golden color that matches C22000 hardware.  It also possesses a particular resistance to stress corrosion cracking.  The tellurium in the alloy enhances its machinability and formability without the detrimental effects often attributed to lead in machining grade alloys.  It is an alloy suitable for outdoor use where higher strength is required.

Hot and Cold Working:  ACB 3180 has fair hot workability.  Although it is primarily used for high-speed screw machining, it has good cold workability, sustaining a moderate degree of cold work, and is suitable for cold working operations such as bending.

Joining:  Joining by soldering is excellent, and by brazing is good.  The tellurium content prevents successful welding.

Applications:  ACB 3180 was developed at Ansonia Copper & Brass, Inc. to provide a non-leaded commercial bronze suitable for plumbing and hardware applications.  The addition of nickel to ACB 3180 gives added strength where mechanical properties are needed in applications such as builders' and lock hardware.

Standard Forms Available:  Rod, bar and wire
