COPPER ALLOY
DATA SHEET
C18700
ACB Leaded Copper C18700 has a nominal composition of 99.0% copper and 1.0% lead. The alloying element lead imparts free-cutting properties to the copper. Although the addition of lead slightly lowers the electrical conductivity below that of electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) C11000 copper, Leaded Copper C18700 still possesses high electrical conductivity well within the limits imposed by most current-carrying requirements.
Hot Working: This alloy is not recommended for hot working
due to its lead content.
Cold Working: ACB Leaded Copper C18700 has a good capacity for being cold worked. It cold heads exceptionally well either in a single operation or where secondary operations are required. Free cutting rods of this alloy are normally produced in hard drawn condition; however, if such cold work as bending, flaring, heading or beading is required in addition to machining, the temper of the alloy can be modified.
Joining: This alloy is readily joined by brazing and soldering, but the lead content prevents successful welding. Strong reducing atmospheres such as hydrogen are not recommended because low levels of oxygen in this alloy may make it susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.
Applications: The various and unusual properties of ACB Leaded Copper C18700 have found numerous applications for the manufacture of parts machined from rods and for current carrying studs, nuts and bolts designed for use at ambient temperatures. The alloy is also frequently used as the preferred metal for bolts with drilled shanks and for parts subjected to fine machining, as well as for connectors and motor parts. However, it must be noted that in spite of this alloy's many superior qualities, it should not be used for hot forging.
Applicable Specifications: When so specified, ACB Leaded Copper C18700 will be manufactured to the latest revision of ASTM B301.
Standard Forms Available: Rod, bar, wire and shapes. For other forms, please consult Ansonia Copper & Brass, Inc.
