COPPER ALLOY DATA SHEET

C22000

Among the binary brasses, Commercial Bronze 22000 holds a favored position where product appearance is a factor of concern.  Nominally composed of 90% copper and 10% zinc, this alloy not only possesses a rich and pleasing bronze color, but has practical properties such as excellent malleability, ductility, strength and hardness, surpassing that of C21000.  It is also noted for its galling and corrosion resistance.

Hot and Cold Working:  C22000 has good qualities for hot workability.  It is ductile when annealed, yet is also capable of assuming good rigidity when hard drawn.  It also possesses an excellent capacity for being cold worked.  As cold headed wire, it provides an extremely serviceable stock for screws, rivets, studs and bolts.  It performs extremely well in all operations requiring drawing, forming and bending, coining, roll threading and knurling, shearing, spinning, swaging, squeezing, hot forging, heading and upsetting, piercing and punching.

Joining:  Joining by soldering and brazing is excellent and can be readily done.  Good joints can be obtained by oxyacetylene and gas shielded arc welding.  Rod, bar, and wire may be resistance flash butt-welded.

Applications:  This alloy's high resistance to stress corrosion cracking and dezincification make it especially suitable for use as an engineering alloy.  Because of its remarkable durability, C22000 is used extensively in architectural, marine and building hardware, and munitions applications where fully exposed outdoor service or rigorous service exists.  This includes its use as etching bronze, grillwork, chain links, screen cloth, escutcheons, line clamps, rivets, screws, bolts, and bullet jackets.

For appearance, its pleasing color also finds use in cosmetic applications such as lipstick and compact cases, and in ornamental trim and costume jewelry.  Large diameter tube production of this alloy also contributes to its varied uses.  Projectile rotating bands are fabricated from the base stock cut from these tubes, as are pump cylinder liners, paper rolls, and liquid carriers for the chemical industry.

Applicable Specifications:  When so specified, C22000 will be manufactured to the latest revision of the following specifications:  for wire, ASTM Specification B134, Military Specifications MIL‑W‑6712 and MIL‑W‑85; for tube, ASTM Specification B135, Military Specifications MIL‑C‑21768, MIL-C-3383 and MIL‑T‑23068; and federal specifications.

Standard Forms Available:  Rod, bar, wire and tube.  For other forms, please consult Ansonia Copper & Brass, Inc.
