How We Do It :: Rod Department
Overview
The Rod Department is the largest manufacturing group in terms of
jobs and space. The Rod Mill makes rods ( rounds, hexagons, and octagons),
bars ( squares and rectangles) and shapes ( everything else) in straight
lengths up to 14 feet long.
Process
We take the extrusions and continuous castings and through a series
of steps controlled by a mill ticket for each job, produce rod, bar,
shapes, (Rod Mill) and wire (Wire Mill) in a variety of specialized
packages.
Schumags
The primary processes are Schumags and Draw Benches. Schumags finish
sizes about an inch and smaller in diameter directly from extruded
coils by drawing, straightening and cutting to length in one operation.
This is our most cost-effective way to make rod unless special tempers
are required.
Each step in the routing (mill ticket) is carefully planned to accomplish
a necessary metallurgical or manufacturing purpose so the customer
gets a product that meets their order requirements AND works well
for them.
Draw Benches
Draw Benches are used for larger round sizes and special shapes and
bars. Sizes up to about 4 inches can be drawn, and we also sell rod
up to 4 1/2 inches as plain extruded. Between draw bench passes, we
often use annealing and cleaning processes to soften and clean the
metal, all steps according to the mill ticket plan. We use a variety
of pointing and lubrication methods to enable the draws to be made.
Finishing & Inspection
We finish the lengths by straightening on two-roll (Medart) or multi-roll
straighteners, and, in some cases, by hydraulic press or hand straightening.
Cut-to-length, inspection and packing finally bring the product to
the shipping room.
